School's Out For Summer!

Well..we survived! Between school, soccer, swim team and oh yeah…MY JOB…life has been completely nutso. The blog has taken a backseat to be certain. And the guilt…oh the guilt…I have felt about ignoring it, has been debilitating.  Ok, not really. But I have missed it.

Now that the summer is here, I am vacation dreaming (and packing!). We are headed, as always, to the beach and I will spend an entire week soaking up the summer sun. One of the things I love best about the beach, or the lake for that matter, is when the nights are cool and you just sit and talk about absolutely nothing for hours.

When I was growing up, those conversations always happened in my grandparent's screened in porch. We would sit and listen the sound of the buoys in the water and the grown ups would talk for what seemed like forever.  It burned in me a love of porches!  When we did our addition, we gave a lot of thought to adding one but in the end decided that "real" living space was more important.  Plus, DC summers are not exactly cool and crisp. Sitting outside is rare after July. But that doesn't stop me from dreaming of the perfect porch!

Here are a few of my favs…(all from Houzz)

And what would a porch be without a great cocktail to sip on right? Here are three you have to try. First up, a watermelon cucumber cooler from Martha Stewart. Love love love anything with cucumber.

Sangria is a standard summer cocktail in our house. My husband makes a mean white one and sometimes a red. I think this summer we might try some new ones.  Here's one that looks good…(recipe here).

And how about this one from Green Kitchen Stories. It's actually not a cocktail - just a strawberry lemonade but there's no reason you couldn't add something to kick it up a notch (shout out to Emeril ca. 2002).

So despite being somewhat chilly and rainy, and even though we are leaving for a soccer tournament with 6 GAMES today, I'll be dreaming of a cold drink on a cool night in a beautiful screened in porch!

Hello...Is It Me You're Looking For?

Great song right?  Have you ever seen this picture of Lionel as a Missing Person? Funny!

But not so funny when you are talking about a MIA blogger! I have fallen off the wagon - life, work, end of school year, soccer, swim team, etc etc etc.....sigh.  When all I really want to do is design, design, design!

It's hard to believe that we are coming up on the one year anniversary of breaking ground on our house construction. Last year at this time, we were SOOOO so close to getting it all done when our financing fell apart. We. Were. Devastated. Not only had we received a verbal "guarantee" from the lender that we were good to go, but we had already spent thousands of dollars on the architectural plans and the deposit for our builder. It was without a doubt one of the more stressful times in our life.  But I absolutely refused to give up and spent about a week calling every lender I could find until I found a guy who literally swooped in like Batman and saved the day. He ordered a new appraisal on the house and presto! new loan.  Thanks to Vince, I am writing you from my gorgeous new office and not the basement where I used to suffer (ha ha!).

I went back and looked at the post I wrote about a year ago and it included a bunch of pictures from our house before construction. Since so many of you are new to this, I thought I'd share them again.

Check them out:  PRE-CONSTRUCTION HOUSE PHOTOS

It's fun to look back and see how our style has evolved over the years. Obviously, I was into color back then - and still am - but I hope in a more sophisticated way.  I sometimes wonder though if my use of color is a sign of my amateur status as a designer. Not that I don't love the rooms I've done, but I always sort of default to some bold color or print in almost every room. And then I will happen to see something like this unbelievably gorgeous, mostly white home that is currently featured on the Style Me Pretty blog that I found through one of my favorite sites Life On Virginia Street and I think...now THAT is style!  I really aspire to refine mine to be more like this.

I think my favorite of all these pictures is the Master Bedroom and since I have yet to decorate mine, I am tempted to consider changing it up and doing white in there. I LOVE how she has  mixed the softness of the bed, with the elegance of the glass bedside table and then the heavier wood lamp.  I am not saying the white bed would hold up without injury in a house with two smallish kids....but this could really be something to consider.

I just feel like you couldn't possibly wake up anything less than perfectly happy and refreshed in that bedroom.  So what do you think? Go for a white bedroom?????
